Nissan was founded in 1933 under the Nissan Group in Yokohama, Japan. The auto division broke off in 1934 becoming Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. During the late 30’s Nissan built trucks, airplanes and engines. Using an integrated assembly system, they built for the Imperial Japanese Army. In 1937 American company Graham – Paige supplied the plans and plant facilities for Nissan had obtained a Graham license. In the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s Nissan partnered with many car companies like the Austin Motor Company and then later merged with Prince Motor Company. Throughout the years, vehicles were sold under both the Datsun and Nissan brand. Datsun vehicles were produced from 1931 – 1984 and Nissan vehicles from 1937-current.

Nissan formed a US subsidiary, Nissan Motor Corporation USA in 1960 and by 1970 Nissan had become a large exporter of vehicles. In 1984 the Datsun brand was phased out and by 1985 cars were produced under the Nissan name. In 1989, Nissan introduced Infiniti. Infiniti was created as the luxury vehicle division of Nissan. Nissan and Infiniti are both headquartered out of Yokohama. In 1990 Nissan North America, Inc opened its North American operations and became fully operational making cars like the Altima and the Quest minivan. Nissan also begins expanding into the UK, China and Europe.

Today, Nissan has over 16 plants worldwide and sells to over 160 countries. As a global company, Nissan continues to focus on providing value to its customers and shareholders.
