Mini, a small economy car known for its speed, customization and size. Mini is produced by the English based British Motor Corporation and its successors from 1959 when it was founded. The Mini was a result of the fuel shortage from the 1956 Suez Crisis. In the UK, petrol was rationed, and it was extremely expensive to fuel large vehicles. So, the Mini was officially announced for public sale on August 26, 1959. Its unique 2-door design was created by Sir Alex Issigonis. Immediately, the mini became well publicized by film and music stars like The Beatles, Peter Sellers and Mary Quant.
The original model is considered to be an icon of 1960s British pop culture.
British Motor Corporation created a Competition Division in the 1960s. This division played a key role in enduring the Mini’s success in motorsport. In 1961, British racing legend John Cooper created a more powerful engine, bigger brakes and added some of his personal tweaks. Considered a rally demon, the Classic Mini Cooper 997 was introduced. The performance versions, the Mini Cooper and the Cooper S entered the Monte Carlo Rally and were quite successful winning in 1964, 1965 and 1967. Mini also received wins in the European Rally Championship in 1965 and 1966.
