Founded by Jujiro Matsuda in 1920, Mazda is headquartered in Japan. Mazda began in Hiroshima and its name originates from Ahura Mazda, the Persian God of harmony, intelligence and wisdom from the earliest civilization in West Asia. In addition, Jujiro’s last name, Matsuda, pronounced Mazda in Japanese. The first tricycle truck was the first vehicle to come from Mazda in 1931. It was called the Mazda – go. During the war, like many manufacturing plants ceased production to help with war efforts. The same went for Mazda. They produced weapons throughout World War II.

For a long time, auto manufacturers said creating a rotary engine combined with high power and a compact car size couldn’t be done. Throughout the 60’s Mazda gathered many engineers that set out to create it. In 1967 Mazda changed the game by releasing its rotary powered Cosmo sports car. They produced the Cosmo from 1967 – 1995. The name Cosmo reflected the cultural “Space Race” times. Even though every vehicle produced by Mazda bore the Mazda name, the company wasn’t officially named Mazda until 1984. Over the years Mazda vehicles have ranged from sports cars to sedans and SUVs.

Mazda continues to focus on innovation and fun. A very popular marketing campaign was the Zoom-Zoom campaign in the early 2000’s. Mazda used the phrase to reflect the “emotion of motion” that is present in their cars. To this day, many will use the Zoom – Zoom slogan when mentioning Mazda. Mazda has also gone through many logo changes and typesets over the years. Often just using the M letter or full letters in Mazda to represent the brand. The current logo symbolizes a pair of wings shaped like an M in an oval. The shape also stands for creativity, vitality, kindness and resilience.
