GMC stands for General Motors Company. It was founded by William C. Durant in 1911. GMC is an American auto manufacturer based in Detroit, Michigan. GMC focuses on building and selling SUVs, pickup trucks, commercial trucks, buses, vans and military vehicles. In the US, GMC trucks are sold alongside Buick automobiles allowing the dealerships to offer both cars and trucks. Before there was GMC, the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was responsible for building one-ton trucks in the early 1900’s. In 1909 General Motors acquired the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and in 1911, they created the General Motors Truck Company. Rapid Motor Vehicle Company built several models before the acquisition including a 10 and 13 passenger carry all truck. In 1909, the first truck to conquer Pikes Peak road race was built by Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. Quite an accomplishment at the time.
During WWII, GMC built trucks to use by the United States Armed Forces. In fact, they built 600,000 trucks for use including a six-wheel drive amphibious truck. Post war, GMC continued building light duty, medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks. They also introduced buses, vans and eventually sports utility vehicles. Popular models over the years include the Model T, the Model C, the Sonoma, the Sierra, the Envoy, the Rally and the Jimmy.
In 1999, GMC introduced the Denali nameplate. The Denali name was added as the premier line for the GMC division. In 1998, it was added to the Yukon. Denali is a native name of the tallest mountain in North America. In 2009, GMC ended their production of medium-duty trucks after producing for over 100 years. They decided to focus on heavy duty trucks, SUVs, vans along with commercial vehicles like fire trucks, ambulances and military vehicles. The next step is for GMC to enter the hybrid market. GMC is determined to continue building advanced vehicles focused on safety and intelligent innovation for many years to come.
