Fiat History
Fiat, founded in 1899 in Turin, Piedmont, Italy. FIAT stands for Fabbrica Italiana Automobil Torino which translates to Italian Automobiles Factory of Turin. Fiat opened its first auto factory in 1900 and that year they made 24 cars. Its founder Giovanni Agnelli was an Italian businessman who saw an opportunity to invest in the newest invention of a horseless carriage. He was a part of the founding members of Fiat and later he became the chairman of Fiat. The first Fiat auto produced was the Fiat 4 HR. It was a three – speed, two – cylinder rear mounted engine vehicle. The first Fiat truck was made in 1903. The company went public by selling shares on the Milan Stock Exchange which gave them funds to continue producing vehicles. Fiat is currently the largest auto manufacturer in Italy.
Fiat first hit the United States in 1908 and in 1910 Fiat launched American F.I.A.T. Automobile Company. They built the first American factory in Poughkeepsie, NY. During the first World War, Fiat like many companies devoted its factories to assisting the armed forces. At this same time, Fiat ceased production in the US. Once the war was over, Fiat introduced its first tractor for sale. Once the second World War hit, again the factories provided machinery to the fight. Fiat made fighter aircraft and tanks. Once the war was over Fiat was able to get back to producing autos. During this time, they released the Fiat 500, Fiat 1400, the Fiat 1100, the Fiat 1200 Spyder, Fiat, 1500 Cabriolet, Fiat 850 Sport Coupe and the Fiat Fiorino.
In 2014, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles became the new owner of Fiat Group and Fiat has resided with them to present day. There are several Fiat plants across the globe, and they build and export vehicles worldwide. Fiat currently offers sedans, coupes, crossovers and sport models in their classic Italian design.
