Bavarian Motor Works, referred to as BMW began in 1916 by its founders, Camillo Castiglioni, Franz Josef Popp and Karl Rapp. BMW is headquartered in Munich, Germany and currently produces both autos and motorcycles. In its beginning they were originally a manufacturer of aircraft engines in 1917 and 1918. The company released its first motorcycle in 1923 the BMW R 32. The first automobile was called the BMW 3/15 produced from 1928 – 1931. Aircraft engines, motorcycles and autos were mainly produced by BMW until World War II. During the war both motorcycles and auto production ceased. Factories were bombed and the other facilities were banned from making vehicles or aircraft. Finally, in 1948, BMW began motorcycle production and in 1952 they resumed their vehicle production. BMW continued to expand throughout the 50s and were officially sold in the US as of 1956.

Over the years BMW has used model names consisting of three numbers followed by one or two letters. In this naming system, the first number represents the model series, the last two digits represent the engine displacement. The letters can change between models. The most common letters used are d (diesel), I (fuel injected), L (long wheelbase), td (turbo diesel) and x (XDrive). There are several series that don’t follow the rule, the I series, the X series and the Z series. there have been many popular models, including the BMW 5 series, the BMW Isetta, the BMW M series and the BMW Perillo.

The BMW logo features the State of Bavarian colors, blue and white. The logo has changed slightly over the years. Originally, the logo had gold letters and was changed to white letters in 1953. BMW released the slogan of “The Ultimate Driving Machine” in North America in 1974. Currently BMW has over 30 production plants in many countries around the world. Additional automobile brands under the BMW name include Rolls-Royce and Mini. BMW continues to be a leader of performance vehicles. BMW owners are loyal and tend to return to BMW again and again.
