Alfa Romeo History
Alfa Romeo founded in 1910 is a premier Italian luxury auto manufacturer. Known as A.L.F.A which stood for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automibil translated to Anonymous Lombard Automobile Factory. The flagship automobile was designed by Giuseppe Merosi. Merosi was an Italian automobile engineer. The first model was released on the market in 1910. It was a four-cylinder passenger vehicle released as the ALFA 24HP. The same vehicle made its racing debut in 1911 at the 6th Annual Targa Florio. The Targa Florio was an open road auto race held in Sicily. It was the oldest sports car racing event, founded in 1906. Later in 1920, the name of the company was changed to Alfa Romeo. The first car to be released under the Alfa Romeo name was the Torpedo 20-30 HP.
During the war, like many factories across Europe, The Alfa factory helped with the wartime efforts. After World War II, automobile factories resumed producing vehicles and the same went for Alfa Romeo. Not only did the Alfa Romeo company continue producing vehicles they also continued building sports cars for racing. Over the years Alfa Romeo has had financial and political challenges. In the 80’s both Fiat and Ford were in battle to merge or buy Alfa Romeo. In the end, Fiat made an offer to acquire the company in full and in 1986 the deal was made. The most important benefit to the deal is that it would keep Alfa Romeo in Italians hands.
Popular models throughout the years include the Gran Sport, the 2600 Touring Spider, the Grand Prix, the Mille Miglia, the Giulia and the GTA. The Alfa Romeo logo has always been one of the most interesting emblems in the auto industry. There are two main parts to the logo. The right side of the logo is a giant serpent or dragon eating a red man. The left side of the logo is a red cross over a white background, a medieval Christian symbol. Other than some minor changes with the gold letters and circular appearance the logo has been fairly consistent. From its sports racing roots to the luxury models offered today, Alfa Romeo plans to continue producing innovative, Italian influenced vehicles for its owners worldwide.
