Hyundai Extended Warranty Cost
How Much is a Hyundai Extended Warranty? Getting the Lowdown on Hyundai’s Protection Plans.
Hyundai is known for its safety, reliability and generous warranties. The automaker has led the industry in terms of manufacturers’ warranties with its popular 10-year Powertrain Warranty, known as America’s Best Warranty. To complement the original manufacturer’s warranty, Hyundai also offers extended warranties and other protection plans to give consumers more assurance and rest easy. Let’s take a look at the Hyundai extended warranty and determine if it’s right for you.
First things first, let’s get clear on language and general information as it relates to extended warranties. An extended warranty can also be called a vehicle service contract, while in California these are called mechanical breakdown insurance policies and regulated by the state government.
Extended warranties may be sold at the dealership when you purchase your vehicle or post purchase as an aftermarket offering. Extended warranties may also be purchased through third-party companies, like olive®. An extended warranty is an additional cost to the vehicle. If you decide to purchase an extended warranty at the dealership, many times you will be asked to pay for the extended warranty up front. If this is not an option for you, you’ll also have the option to finance it along with the purchase of your vehicle.
Hyundai refers to its extended warranty as a vehicle service contract. Officially, it’s called the Hyundai Protection Plan Vehicle Service Contract (VSC). As mentioned before, it is an extra protection offering, and builds upon the existing Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Warranty, namely the 10-year Powertrain Warranty.

Breaking Down the Hyundai Extended Warranty
Hyundai offers three Vehicle Service Contracts (VSC): Powertrain, Gold and Platinum. The Powertrain is the most basic, but all three will offer protection for mechanical repair of major components. You’ll be responsible for the deductible at the time of service, however. Additionally, all three include:
- Nationwide service at participating Hyundai dealers
- Authentic Hyundai parts are used for repairs
- Roadside assistance 24/7
- Towing benefit to the nearest Hyundai dealership or authorized service provider
- Up to $35 a day for rental car reimbursement for up to 10 days
- Trip interruption coverage of up to $200 per day for up to five days
- Fully transferable
Hyundai’s Powertrain option is the lowest tier of protection and covers the basics, protecting your engine, transmission and drive axle. Hyundai’s Gold plan is the mid-level VSC that includes protection for climate control, shocks, front and rear suspension. This plan also covers your fuel and electrical systems.
These VSCs may be suitable for Hyundai base models, but it’s important to understand your specific Hyundai model’s reliability. The good news is that in general, Hyundai vehicles have great reliability across the board, but it’s always a wise idea to do a little bit of research into your model’s reliability and any repairs other Hyundai owners have dealt with.
If you have a fully loaded Sonata or Elantra with lots of tech and electrical components, the Powertrain and Gold plans may not be the best choice for you. You may want to consider the next tier level, the Platinum.
The most comprehensive Hyundai VSC is the Hyundai Platinum extended warranty tier. In addition to what is covered in both the Powertrain and Gold tiers, the Platinum will cover most major systems, including steering, brakes and CV boots. It also covers electronics like navigation and audio systems, as well as other electronic components, like sensors and power seats. According to Hyundai, the Platinum plan offers the most comprehensive protection with coverage for more than 1,500 vehicle parts.
Regardless of which plan you opt for, it’s a good idea to know what is not included in your plan. In general, these are not covered by the Hyundai VSCs:
- Mechanical breakdowns caused by poor maintenance or pre-existing issues.
- Mechanical breakdowns covered by your Hyundai vehicle’s factory warranty.
- Mechanical breakdowns caused by an accident, collision, vandalism or weather-related damage.
It’s also good to note that your Hyundai vehicle must have one month and 1,000 miles remaining on its New Vehicle Limited Warranty to be eligible for extended coverage through Hyundai.
How Much Does the Hyundai Extended Warranty Platinum Cost?
Just like any insurance product, determining the exact cost for the Hyundai extended warranty is not an easy question to answer. Most plans and policies factor in a few key items to determine price, like make, model, year, mileage and zip code. These items tend to be standard across the board when it comes to pricing. Hyundai is no different.
Depending on the factors mentioned above, extended warranties can range anywhere from $20 – $80 per month on average. There may be outliers to this price range, and unfortunately there is no universal pricing.
Hyundai offers two deductible options as part of its coverage plans, $0 or $100 deductible. Choosing the zero deductible will often result in higher premiums. The $100 deductible is offered to those consumers who want a lower upfront cost. It’s safe to assume that the Hyundai Platinum VSC will be the most expensive of the Hyundai VSC plans as it is the most comprehensive. If you decide on the Platinum tier with a zero deductible you’d likely see reduced pricing up front.
If you’re shopping for an extended warranty solution for your Hyundai and you’re considering one of the Hyundai VSCs, then we’d recommend contacting your local Hyundai dealer to find out what you can expect in terms of price as it relates to your Hyundai model.
Hyundai’s Reliability
A couple of important items to know before you buy an extended warranty are the vehicle’s reliability and common repairs associated with the model. Some vehicles are prone to engine repairs, transmission problems or general automotive concerns. Knowing this information can help you determine if an extended warranty is needed. By knowing your model’s reliability record, you’re able to make a more informed decision.
You’ll be glad to know that Hyundai does make reliable vehicles. Regardless of the model, Hyundai takes great pride in manufacturing vehicles that are dependable, safe and a good value for consumers.
Hyundai scored a Reliability Rating of 4 or higher on the RepairPal Reliability Ranking boasting an overall low repair frequency. It ranks fourth out of 32 for all car brands and 345 unique models. The average annual repair cost for a Hyundai is $468 compared to more than $650 for all other models. That’s more than 25% less than the national average. According to RepairPal, Hyundai vehicles visit the repair shop less frequently, about 0.3 times a year, and when they do have to go into the repair shop, the likelihood of those repairs being severe is 10%, compared to 12% for major issues across all models.
Considerations when Shopping for an Extended Warranty?
We’ve discussed reliability in terms of how it can help you make an informed decision when purchasing an extended warranty.
As we’ve said in some of our other blogs, buying the most reliable car you can afford will help you avoid having to pay later for costly repairs, but even the most well built vehicle still breaks down from time to time, so an extended warranty is a good idea.
Plus, there are many consumers who want more protection than just a reputation for reliability, so a vehicle extended warranty is appealing. If you’re going to purchase an extended warranty, we urge consumers to do some research first and compare pricing. Hyundai is a reliable brand, but it doesn’t hurt to shop around. Here are some considerations to help you determine the best extended warranty solution for your vehicle, whether it be through Hyundai or other trusted companies like olive®.
