Volkswagen, known to its owners and consumers as VW was founded in 1937. VW is a German auto manufacturer headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. Volkswagen builds and ships their vehicles worldwide. Volkswagen translates to “People’s Car” in German. In the 30’s not many Germans had automobiles. Adolf Hitler ordered the production of a basic vehicle to transport families in order to have access to a vehicle. Hitler was very hot on this idea and in the end, sponsored the production of the VW Beetle. The Beetle was designed by Ferdinand Porsche. The VW Beetle became one of the most iconic autos across the globe. During WWII auto manufacturing changed to the production of military vehicles.
Post war, Volkswagen was an important element to regenerating the economy. Both the VW Beetle and the introduction of the VW microbus came in 1950. Then in 1955 VW introduced its sports car the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. It was a 2-seater, coupe convertible. Volkswagen produced the Karmann Ghia from 1955 – 1974. It is one of VW’s most popular models. With Volkswagen making more of an entrance to markets outside of Germany, they formed Volkswagen of America in 1955. Both the Beetle and the Bus were popular in the US market. Volkswagen continued to grow through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Volkswagen continued to introduce vehicles like the Jetta, the Golf, the Polo and the Scirocco.
In 2017, Volkswagen announced their plans to create a new focus on electric vehicles. Their goal is to launch several new EV models.
