Subaru History
Founded in 1953, Subaru is headquartered in Shibuya, Japan. Subaru is the automotive division of the Japanese transportation conglomerate Subaru Corporation. The Subaru Corporation was formerly known as Fuji Heavy Industries. The founders Kenji Kita and Chikuhei Nakajima both worked for Fuji Heavy Industries which started out as the Aircraft Research Laboratory in 1915. Subaru is the Japanese name for the Pleiades star group. Japanese tradition states that one of the seven stars that make up the Pleiades is invisible, resulting in 6 stars. Which is why there are only six stars in the Subaru logo. The first Subaru car released by Fuji Heavy Industries was the Subaru 1500 in 1954. The first Subaru truck was released in 1961.
In 1967 it was suggested to bring the Subaru 360 to the US by Malcolm Bricklin. Subaru agreed and Subaru of America opened in 1968 in Pennsylvania. The US headquarters currently resides in Camden, New Jersey. From the beginning, Subaru has been known for its boxer engine layout and symmetrical all-wheel drive system which was introduced in 1972.
