Lexus Vehicle History
Lexus is the luxury line of Japan’s auto manufacturer Toyota. It was founded in 1986 by founder Eiji Toyoda. Toyoda was mainly responsible for bringing Toyota Motor Corporation to worldwide presence. Lexus is headquartered out of Nagoya, Japan. The goal set out by Toyota in 1983 was to make a new premium sedan. The result was the launch of the Lexus LS in 1989. Toyota’s main rivals Nissan and Honda had recently developed their luxury divisions, Infiniti in 1989 and Acura in 1986. The flagship Lexus model was the Lexus LS 400, a full-size luxury sedan. It had a design that had no like elements to any previous Toyota models.
Throughout the 90’s Lexus had much success in the US Market. During 1990 which was the first full year of Lexus sales, the company sold over 63,000 sedans. Later they exploded to Canada and Australia. At the end of 1991, Lexus had become the top selling premium import vehicle. In 2006, the Lexus F division was introduced. It is the high-performance division of Lexus. The F refers to the Fuji International Speedway which is the site of vehicle testing and development. The first auto in the F fleet was the Lexus IS F. The F Sport models have included the Lexus CT 200F Sport, The IS 250 F Sport, the GS 350, the RX 350 F Sport, the GS 450h F Sport and many others. Theories to the creation of the Lexus brand is that the name is an acronym for “luxury exports to the U.S”.
